Does Biotin Prevent Hair Loss?

One of the leading causes of hair loss in women and men is due to biotin deficiency which can be recovered with medication.

It is good if one can diagnose biotin or Vitamin B7 deficiency on time and fix the daily dosage to regain lost hair.

In this educational video, Dr John Watts - a noted dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad - explains the pros and cons of having Biotin deficiency and how it may impact hair growth.

Biotin: Advantages for Hair Growth

If the body has adequate levels of Biotin, hair loss can be controlled. This is not true if it is the other way round. Besides controlling hair loss, Biotin also makes the hair look voluminous and shiny. “Hair thinning can also get repaired,” said Dr John Watts.

However, if one is expecting dense hair growth with an adequate level of Biotin, Dr John Watts said that no research has pointed in this direction yet.

The other advantages of Biotin for the body are that the skin will always remain hydrated and fingernails will stay healthy and strong. “This vitamin is also good for pregnant women and diabetes patients,” added Dr John.

Biotin for Hair Loss Prevention

The deficiency of Biotin can lead to hair loss if the body does not get the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). According to Dr John Watts, this deficiency can be met by taking a vitamin supplement.

“The minimum daily requirement of biotin that the body may require is 30 mg per day. This will help the hair stay strong and healthy,” said Dr John.

In fact, one can take even 2000 mg-5000 mg of Biotin daily without any adverse side effects. If the amount is in excess of what the body requires, it will be discharged through urination.

In case, hair loss continues even after taking the biotin supplement, one needs to consult a dermatologist/ hair expert to identify the exact cause of hair loss. “It could be attributed to inadequate Thyroid levels or hereditary hair loss but they need to be identified,” informed Dr John.

Biotin Rich Foods

If one is not interested in taking Biotin supplement in the form of medication, what’s the other alternative? The answer is to consume Biotin-rich food such as egg yolk, fish, meat, milk, oats, spinach, tomato, apple and cheese.

Biotin Side-Effects:

In rare instances, intake of biotin supplements can cause side effects in some people. “One can face kidney ailments and diabetics can report insulin-related problems. Sometimes, it may result in skin rashes or stomach upset issues,” informed Dr John, while advising patients never to opt for self-medication and avoid taking it as an Over-The-Counter drug.

“One must always consult a dermatologist before taking a Biotin supplement,” he advised while urging the viewers to share the video among their friends for awareness of the issue.
